What is referred to as a “smoking” in German, French, and Italian-speaking countries, is known as a “Tuxedo” in the United States and a “Dinner Suit” in the UK.
Apart from those occasions in which the invitation specifically indicates a “Black Tie” dress code, the dinner suit is used in formal contexts and is generally considered to be evening dress. The traditional dinner jacket is black, with one button and no vent, with satin inserts on the lapels and braid on the trousers. Accessories may comprise a cummerbund, bowtie, and cufflinks.
In recent years, dinner suits have become popular with bridegrooms and look like staying. Indeed, they have been further enriched by the creativity of tailors and designers who have changed the form rather than the substance. Hence the introduction of colours such as blue and red, or even herringbone fabrics trimmed with satin in tone-on-tone shades. Silhouettes have become sleeker than those of tradition, often devoid of braid and presented in the combination with waistcoat and tie rather than cummerbund and bowtie.
